Birk Buttchereyt

Guitar/bass player and producer working out of Berlin’s historic Funkhaus compound.

Birk Buttchereyt

I met guitarist, composer, and producer Birk Buttchereyt in late December 2023. He had just returned from a European tour, the last of some 70+ live shows he had played that year. He seemed grateful to be home.

Needless to say, I was glad that he was still willing to sit down with me and producer Lukas Kurz in the three days left before Christmas to create and record all the guitar and bass guitar parts for The Ellis Court’s What More EP. And if that weren’t enough to be thankful for, we had the pleasure of getting to do this work at Birk’s vintage recording studio inside Berlin’s legendary 1950s Funkhaus complex.

Birk started playing guitar as a kid and early on he took first prize at Germany’s national Jugend Musiziert competition, as well as earning a scholarship from the European Guitar Association (EGTA). After finishing university in Hanover, he began performing out with bands at arena shows and festivals, and he also spent time in Seattle working as a studio assistant with producers of artists like Soundgarden, Death Cab for Cutie, Pearl Jam, and Mudhoney.

Since then he’s been working with bands like LEA, Kafka Tamura, Lilly among Clouds, Das Moped, Ryk, Darjeeling, Tifflis Transit—and now The Ellis Court! Birk’s composing skills can be heard on Netflix’s How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast) and also in commercials for brands like Mercedes Benz.
