Joules the Fox
Singer, songwriter, wanderer, and producer of truly heavenly vocals.
For many people, the intricate multi-layered vocal parts of Joules the Fox’s “Black Sea” probably bring to mind the harmonic wizardry of Jacob Collier—and that’s definitely a compliment.
But for me, the emotional space of Joules’ work is quite different. The magical, brooding landscapes that she paints on songs like “Black Sea” and “Woods of Words” lead me to an emotional place that’s more reminiscent of early 1990’s Luka Bloom. Using some kind of mysterious musical alchemy, she manages to create spaces that are at once both haunting and uplifting.
I only heard Joules’ music because I decided to change the key of one of my songs after I had already recorded the demo of it. When I took it into the studio with producer Lukas Kurz and we started to do vocals, I realized that the high harmony part I had written for the chorus was now just outside of my vocal range. Oops.
Lukas messaged his friend Joules, and she quickly recorded the new part in her studio over the weekend. This not only preserved the harmony I had used in the demo, but the timbre of her voice on that one part also makes the entire track much more interesting in my opinion. That’s musical alchemy.
